I have a 1980 Camaro in which I have installed a relatively mild system. I started out with 5-1/4" Pioneer speakers in the doors and in the rear seat panels, all 4 speakers powered by the Pioneer head unit. Also have Pioneer 6x9's in the rear deck powered by an amp. I felt that I wanted to give the system a little more "A$$", so I ordered these TS-A632P's to upgrade the speakers in the doors and also orderd the TS-A642P's for the rear seat panels (when I get the 642's I'll write a review for those, too). So obviously I'm upgrading from 5-1/4" to 6-1/2" speakers. Now these old crappy cars like mine didn't come with speakers anywhere except the middle of the dashboard and rear deck, so the installation of these speakers in the doors is truly a custom gig. For these to fit, I had to get the Dremel tool out with a cutting wheel and shave a little bit of sheetmetal out of the door that was interfering with the speaker magnet. Here is what annoyed me about these speakers...the mounting screw pattern. It is unlike the 5-1/4" speakers I had in there. Normally, the speaker has one set of 4 tabs, or "ears", through which the mounting screw goes and threads into the little clip, holding it to the door panel. These 6.5's do have "ears", but they are not for top mounting the speakers. I don't know what they are for... I made the mistake of not checking first and cut away a little bit of the door panel so the "ears" line up to new holes. When I went to install the screws, I found that the Grille does not line up with the "ears". Upon a closer look, I saw that there are small holes in the frame of the speaker, just outside the woofer perimeter which are to be used for installation with the speaker grille. You can see the little holes in the photograph of the speaker in the description. AND...these mounting holes in the frame are the SAME pattern as my 5-1/4's are that I just removed. This means that I cut my door panel and made new holes for no reason. Also, the screws they give you are too short because the Grille is somewhat thicker than "normal". The supplied screws didn't extend past the speaker frame far enough to catch the clip in the door panel for proper mounting. I had to find screws that were about a quarter inch longer. I was able to rotate the speaker oh-so-slightly in order to catch some uncut doorpanel material and finish the mounting. This is whay I gave the "Product Features" a 5. As far as sound, I guess I feel a bit more punch than I did with the 5.25" speakers, but these speakers are mainly for Mid and High frequencies. The 6x9's I have take car of all the bass. These 6.5's are spec'ed to reproduce frequencies down to 28Hz, whereas the 5.25's they replaced were spec'ed down to 40Hz. So yes, these sound "punchier" but the difference isn't that dramatic. I'm sure that if you are replacinf cheap paper-cone speakers with these, you'll notice a BIG difference.
I Have these speakers powered just by my Pioneer head unit and compared to stock speakers these things are Great. You can listen to music at low volumes and as long as you keep the bass turned down they don't distort. They sound great and do good at my head units 22 rms so im sure they would be great with an amp.
