Product Reviews For Kenwood KDC-MP538U

  • Amazing sound quality. Plenty of power for everything above 80Hz. Stunning looks, clean and sleek design, well thought out controls and USB capabilities. I have this in my 2007 Nissan Sentra SE-R spec-V.. with speed wire tapping it into my stock speaker wires. I have aftermarket speakers too (Polk db 6.5" coax in front, using a 6x9 adaptor ring.. and OZ Audio 6x9 in the rear deck) The fact that is doesn't use a slide out, or motorized face plate was the deciding factor for me. That is just one more thing that can break or malfunction. I like to just insert my CD without waiting for the HU to flip or fold down. The control knobs are VERY sturdy. I owned an older Kenwood head unit, a 2006 model, and if you so much as sneezed at the right control wheel it would change the track. Or if you tried to change the volume you would accidentally push the knob and change your bass/treble settings. This is NOT the case with this new 2008 unit. It is very rigid and extremely high quality. You will definitely need to read the manual to figure out all it can do, but it only takes literally 10 minutes to do. It is well worth the effort. The best Sound feature is the HPF, which can be different for your front and rear speakers. Also the LOUD feature totally changes the sound. It says 22 watts RMS, and like most kenwoods, as you dial up the volume to 16, 17, 18.. you are starting to doubt if it can give you the volume you desire. But then from 20-27 the power just pours out like a little power-house. Plenty adequate, even with the windows down. The USB feature is AMAZING. Do not use the kenwood software cd though, just cut/paste your songs onto your USB thumb drive. I have a 2GB USB and it works perfectly. Sound Quality is amazing. I was going to step it up to the Excelon version of this head unit, but I did not want the 4V pre-outs. It is MUCH easier to set the gains on your sub's amp with a standard 2V (this is 2.6v) head unit than it is with high voltage units. Avoid the headache. The excelon version offers more sound shaping features, but how many more do you really need?? Save 25 bucks and get this unit instead! You will love this unit, guarunteed! It gets 5 stars from me, and a 100% BUY recommendation!!!

  • put this in my girls car along with two sets of JBL powere sereis 6.5's on a JBL GT sereis amp and 2 12 inch TMA subs on a TMA T500.1 amp and the over all sound is great especialy for her first system. this unit is awsome for the price good pre-amp power and over all good sound would recommend for any budget system or daily driver.

  • I bought this head unit as a temporary install until my whole new system. I bought it mainly for the price and because of the iPod connection. It's a pretty good unit, which surprised me. The iPod connection is a bit slow though. If you have a ton of music on your iPod like me, this unit will slightly dissapoint you. Also, the EQ is weak. But if you have the money, go with the Alpine CDA-9886
