  • This subs is the best spl/sq sub on the market. it kills all of the competitors such as w7's. jl even admits the 9500 kills the w7. best sub ever.

  • FORGET WHAT YOU THINK YOU KNOW ABOUT SUBWOOFERS. I HAVE A RETAIL BUISNESS IN EASTERN PA. I HAVE USED SOME OF THE BEST BRANDS IN THE INDUSTRY ROCKFORD,PLANET AUDIO,CRYSTAL MOBILESOUND,SOUNDSTREAM,AUDIOMOBILE,LANZAR,ORION,JL.......JUST TO NAME A FEW. I HAVE NEVER COME ACROSS A PRODUCT THAT HAS IMPRESSED ME SO MUCH.AT ONE TIME I WAS AN EXTREME MTX HATER.....W I KNOW WHY.THESE PEOPLE DONT JUST MAKE CAR AUDIO PRODUCTS THEY INNOVATE AND ENGINEER AND HAVE RAISED THE BAR IN THE INDUSTRY OF SUBWOOFERS. IF YOU ARE SERIOUS AND PASSINATE ABOUT CAR AUDIO YOU WOULD BE CHEATING YOURSELF TO BUY ANY OTHER PREMIUM SUBWOOFER ON THE MARKET. I HAVE 2 OF THESE WITH A KICKER KX1200.1 IN A SUBZONE PORTED ENCLOSURE AND NO COMBINATION I HAVE EVER OWNED COMES REMOTELY CLOSE TO THE OUTPUT OF THIS COMBINATION.

  • This the best sub out on the market. This sub can handle anything you put to it and will not blow. The JLW7 is an excellent sub but can not beat it.

  • Have any of you even heard a JL audio w7 powered correctly?? My friend has a jl audio w7 12 inch woofer being pushed by a jl audio 1000/1 monoblock amp. I believed all the hype that this woofer was better then the w7 so decided to check it out. I bought this woofer in 12 inch 4 ohm dual voice coil powered by an mtx 1501D amp. I'm sorry but the w7 might be more expensive, but the mtx cant hit low notes to save it's life. It misses notes and sounds fluttery and not deep at all. Reading all of these reviews that it's better then the w7 makes me realize a few things, #1 Marketing Crew for mtx, #2 Has only heard the mtx and never the w7, #3 heard a w7 powered incorrectly. If you can afford it go with the w7. I also hear really good things about the Diamond Audio.

  • i am from minneota i run a car audio shop, i went to an mtx seminar and there were 4 rockford fosgates in a yukon and in another yukon there was 1 mtx 9500. this sub kick the hell outta the 4 rockfords, i am a witness to the power of this sub, the jl audio is nice but does not come close to mtx

  • One of the best subs I've heard. It's the closest thing I've heard to my Alpine 12" type-x's. Depending on the kind of music you like, this thing sounds better than the W7.

  • I owned the 12 inch dual 4 ohm model of this woofer. I was not all that impressed having heard an array of different speakers, although I will admit it is all about your musical preferences. This sub is NOT an SQ sub, it is mainly SPL and do not expect it to go below 40 Hz. I had mine in a custom ported enclosure and it could not hit 50-40 or less Hz without sounding fluttered and empty. It could not lock on those notes. If you want loud, decent sounding mid/upper bass frequency, then this sub might be for you. There are much better sounding subs for less money though. Check out the Adire Audio Brahma, Image Dynamics MAXV.3 and Resonant Engineering XXX. Three woofers that can go louder, sound better and are cheaper then this MTX.

  • Ok, to all you MTX 9500 haters..... I have a friend who had two 10inch W7 in a custom built ported box with a JL thousand watt amp on it in the back of a two-door Grand Am. My other friend bought two 10inch MTX 9500s in custom box with a MTX 1501D amp on them. They kicked the crap out of the W7s. Yes, the W7 is a great sub, but the 9500 beats it in both performance and mechanical integrity. MTX all the way. BTW, my friend with the W7s eventually sold them cause he didn't like them. Peace.

  • ok jl is not bad mtx is not bad rockford is not bad all subs can hit low notes u just cant buy a box for them or get a custom one made they all have there own specs like my rockford T1 vibrated alot more in a sealed box but in a normal ported its didnt pound as hards but hit 33hz but when i made my own ported with 3 chambers to slow tha air flow down but yet it still hit all tha lows its beat a jl 13w7 by 3hz and 17 db's it carries further pounds harder so just build a few boxes and test it and stop fighting over which is better im sure any speaker could outperform mine so im not sayin mine is better just buy what u think is best and what u can afford

  • FORGET ALL THE HYPE surrounding this sub and the JL Audio W7. When powered properly, they have equally high quality sound performance. These are the two best subwoofers on the market, hands down. The only thing that sets the MTX Thunder 9500 apart from the W7 is that the MTX is priced considerably cheaper than the JL. So if it was up to me I would choose the MTX as the best.

  • I have owned both the JL w7(about 1200 watts running to it) and the MTX Thunder 9500(about 1000 watts running to it), and although both subs are very very good, the MTX takes the JL hands down. To all the people who say the MTX cant hit low notes, try putting it in the right box, at Db Drag my MTX hit 143 decibles at 39 Hz. So you cant say it doesnt hit low notes. The MTX is very much worth the money, just make sure you put it in the right box.

  • Sub is sick, bought in a custom ported box from sound blazers in coral springs florida, however it wont hit notes lower than 45hz so songs like blueberry yum yum dont sound as great as the would on the w7 however the sound quality and precision of the notes it hits is alot better than th w7

  • their is no way that this sub can take a W7, JL makes the most TOP OF THE LINE products in car audio. the W7 is absolutly mind blowing. the first time i heard the 9500 i was like.. ok so you have lke 500 watts hooked up to this right, he had 1000! the W7 is the best, so dont even TRY to put this up against it. you just got the best sub for the money but in the back of your head you KNOW the W7's are better, hell i would take my two 12 alpine type x's over these subs any day.. ANY DAY

  • Im going to do my best to end the 9500 vs. w7 war. I went to my local store and bought a 12 inch w7 and a 12 inch 9500. I used JL's 1000/1 amplifier for both subs. The box i bought was custom made to work with either sub and give neither one an advatage. I then had the system installed in the back of my 2004 Grand Cherokee. First off i tested the w7. And yes it is indeed an impressive subwoofer, but it missed several notes when played. I then took out the w7 and put the 9500 in. And at the same gain level on the amp and volume on the deck, the 9500 plain outperformed the w7. It won in both loudness and clarity. I tested each sub severla times and let freinds listen to them without knowing which sub was in. And all of them chose the 9500. Im not being biast but i put both to the test and the mtx 9500 was the winner. The w7 is a nice sub, but the 9500 wins in price as well as sound. Test it for yourself and see what you think.

  • Ok sence no one could realy end this argument, I will just say somthing. I have a full pioneer system besides my 2400watt amp. I actualy have 2 Premier TSW3004 3000watt SPL woofers. but thats not my point, my point is I have a friend with one 12" W7 and It is awsome but I think the price is way to high because my two pioneer woofers comeing to a total of $400 sound better than his W7 and I got 2 subs for what he payed for one so if you can make 2 cheaper subs sound better than one crazy over priced sub than go that way. So... what I'm saying is I would rather have 2 mtx than 1 w7. I know and have heard a sub that will rock both the Mtx and Jl sub is the Big boy from Pioneer 5000watt woofer it is un barable in the car with just one 12" Pioneer is very good to don't forget about there monster woofer when talk about the W7 comes around.

  • Very nice sub if powered right , but all you haters would become beleivers if you heard the diamond audio tdx serious it murders jl by far , lets put it this way JL audio pays 2 to 3$ to make a cone for there w7 , diamond audio pays close to 75$ just to make the cone . you do the math

  • Ive been to a lot of web sites on this sub and the JL W7. I don't know what the piont in fighting over these is. The W7 and the 9500 are pretty much the same thing except for the W7 misses a lot more notes than the 9500 does. W7's cost on this site is over 600 dollars! While the 9500's price is a mere 370 dollars. So what the hell are you guys arguing about? Let the rich boys have their W7s, but us modest HARD WORKING people should stick with the 9500 seeing as how the W7 is noticeably too pricy and inferior to the 9500 even on its best day. PS- the MTX 9500 can be powered to sound perfect with almost any amp, something which is not the case with the W7. The Amp JL recommends, the 1000/1 is over a 1000 dollars in price by JL and over 700 dollars on this site! Not so with the 9500. Ive heard this thing powered with a crappy and beat up 1600 watt boss amp and it was still better than any W7 powered by a 1000/1 that I have EVER heard!

  • I have one of these with the 1501 D amp. . .my friend runs the JLw7 and a JL amp. . . Its 1500 watts i think. . .anyway mine blows hers out of the water. . . I'd recommend this to anyone who's not all about wasting their money on a JL cus its soooo much better. :)

  • I put two of these monsters in the back of a honda civic with two 1501d, and and even with 2 layers of dynamat throughhout the car it still was rattling like crazy. if you like crazy spl with decent sq then this sub is fo you.

    7/31/2005

  • For everyone who says it is better than the W7....hmmm....wonder why they keep comparing it to the W7, b/c the W7 is the best! I'm bias! It's not all about SPL people, it's about sound quality too.......rap SQ and SPL all in one and what do you have- JL Audio!

  • Man, I've been researching speakers and I have to say that all this hype over the w7 and the 9500 leaves me to no conclusion... I will say this the 9500 is a lot less expencive and from what i see it holds alot of ground to the w7 otherwise there would be no w7 9500 war. I would not call myself cheap but I gotta go with the lesser expencive of the two. MY 2 CENTS.....

  • OK... heres soom food for thought. At a local SPL competition there were two eclipse's competing. The first eclipse had TWO woofers MTX 8500 series 12's with an MTX 1501D which MTX claims to make only 1,500 watts running them. This eclipse with an extra battery in the hatch hit 145db. The bad part is that it was very distorted when it was turned up so loud. The second eclipse had 1 woofer, a JL Audio 10" W7 with a JL Audio 500/1 which JL Audio claims to make 500 watts running it. When this car ran through NO ONE believed it was just 1 10" woofer. It hit 145db as well but sounded crystal clear. MTX makes loud speakers, but they sound like crap. I only say that because i hear them distorting constantly because MTX owners usually turn up their subs past their capabilities trying to make it sound louder because they KNOW that JL audio is louder and cleaner. JL may be more expensive, but set properly they will sound WAY better, they will play WAY lower, and last WAY longer. Comparing MTX to JL AUDIO is like comparing a cavalier to a camaro. Both can reach speeds of over 100 MPH, but if you want to race, which one would you rather be sitting in???? You get what you pay for JL AUDIO, the only way

  • I have one of these 12's in the back of a lexus ls 400 in a custom box from mtx. It absolutely domes with only 500 watts from a jl 500/1. very satisfied would recommend to anyone. jl subs too expensive but nice as well.

  • First i bought L7's which was amazing, then i bought W7's which was incredable, then i bought two of these and put the JLs right to shame. Only wish i hadnt bought the JL's Id be a lot richer

  • This is an excellent piece of audio machinerey. For those who say that the W7 is best, think again. Or rather, TEST again. Better yet, put a 13w7 against the 9500's big, big, BIG BROTHER! The MTX-T992244! It is a mind numbing 6000 watts rms and 12000watts peak at 22 INCHES! This thing stands 23 inches tall, weighs THREE HUNDRED AND TWENTY POUNDS, and get this, it's not just an SPL sub, it IS an SQL sub. No JL audio product no matter how good(costly) could ever hope to sound like this mammoth. It makes a SOLO X seem like an 8 inch baby! S.....Q.....L!!!

  • You JL lovers just don't get it. You're all so worried that there is a speaker out there better than the W7 that you begin posting up false reviews about the 9500. I hear that some people state that it can't hit low notes. BULLSHIT! Any serious car audio enthusiast knows that speakers vary in sound by the type of enclosure, veihcle, and power supply that are used in the installation. A 9500 can hit the lowest and loudest notes that an amp can send to it, but only if it's in the right setup.

  • ok ok, i heard much from all brands and all i have to say is that all subs are ment for one purpose and that purpose is to satisfy the consumer. But all in all i believe that JL makes a better sub, but one gets what they pay for. If one has the money for a JL then, Good for you! but if you don't then buy one or two of these and have some one who really knows how to wire it and let it pound. Both JL and MTX make great subs but it depends on the person who is going to buy it. trust me one is going to be happy with the way this sub handles.

  • i have a JL12W7 in my 84 monte carlo and it pounds like hell ive broken my back windows out 3 times, at first i wasent impressed with it but then i got a custom box and now no other cars can compete. MTX is a good brand but the bass is just not clear enough all im saying is if you have the money get JLs a good amp and a custom box and you will never give them up .

  • OK so the way I look at this page is that most of you don't know much about acoustics of different cars and the effects of different enclosures as well as system requirements. The size of the vehicle is a huge factor of the performance of the sub and enclosure. There are many other factors to take into consideration i.e. quality of recording, amplitude of recording, the deck you are using, the quality of cables (RCAs), size of power cables (grounding wire les than 12” if possible @ same gauge as power), whether the enclosure is in a trunk or behind a seat, angle of attack of which cone is facing, the height difference from cone and your ears, power in RMS verses PEAK POWER, whether the amplifier is matched for the sub, material surrounding enclosure, and many other factors. All in all you can make any sub sound better than the other. What you need to do is educate yourself on the best equipment for your application and make a very well planned out and symmetrical design before you make the decision to buy your equipment. And by the way I own MTX subs and amps with a Pioneer Premier deck, and I have had the same equipment for the past 5 years and it hits harder and clearer now than when I bought it. I have also been installing fully customized systems in many show cars and trucks for the past 8 years and have heard a lot of poorly designed systems with worn out subs.

  • Just put 4 of these in a 96 Chevy Suburban with 4 of the 1501D amps (one for each) and man can I burst your ear drums! 172.7dbs is nothing to mess with! I got em' by workin a part time job ($6.50/hr) so you know anyone can afford these things. The sound quality was intense and very clear. They're excellent as SPL and SQ speakers if they are all in thier own individual box using slot ports. I even got 38Hz deep! LOUD....DEEP....CLEAR! MTX!

  • I have had the 9515-44,1 9512-04, and then i decided to buy 2 9500 12's in the sledge hammer enclosure and power them with a kicker 2500.1 and the killed everything around home. For all of you w7 lovers the are way over priced and and they are sorry i have heard them every way you can possibly think of and they still sound like crap. A guy i hung out with had 2 w7 12's and sold them to buy the w7 13.5's he burned every one of them the w7's 13.5s only lasted him a week. I had a 9500 12 on a phoenix gold tatrum 1200.1 and killed his single 13.5w7. And if that isnt proof enough that the 9500 is the way to go just watch the smoking the competition video at mtx. And watch it take a straight 142.0 volts while the w7 blows at a little over a 100 volts. MTX IS THE WAY TO GO!!!

  • I've been working with car audio systems for the past 18 years and today nothing really impresses me. So when this woofer first came out, I thought, oh, its just another woofer. I bought just one of these about a year ago, the 12inch DVC 4ohm model. I used MTX's Sledegehammer enclousre specifically built for this woofer and a Hifonics BX1500D running at 2ohms to push 1000RMS to it. It was very impressive in SPL and SQ was great even at high volumes. I almost forgot it was just one twelve in the back. Even my wife loved it cause it sounded so great. Then about 2 weeks later I was robbed. I had four tvs, a Pioneer AVICN1 and a PS2 in the car and the only thing they took was the amp and the sub. What does that tell you?

  • Now every one knows the quams about the W7 vs. the 9500 series well let me tell you some thing i put together a dual system. i have 3 w7's and 3 MTX's in the back of my tahoe, W7 on the left and MTX 95's on the right each set up with there specific box and optimum amps (W7 has 3 slash series 1000/1 one to each sub and the MTX's have 3 1501D to them) each one misses a few notes and didn't get REAL-LOW Hz but they both crank out a shit load of bass, basically it's all about your preferance weather you go to comps or it's your daily driver. do you want to spend the green or not, all i know is no one comes close to me in town with the dual systems up!!!

    6/9/2006

  • I think the people who are saying the 9500 "misses" notes are using a pourly tuned ported box. you have to understand that the whole point of a ported box is to isolate a specific frequency range and anything outside that is not going to sound as good. Thats why if I was looking for sound quality over SPL I wouldnt use a ported box anyway. Both subs are probably really close in quality and performance so just let people with money to burn have there JL audio and I'll keep my MTX!

  • I've got one 9512-44 pushed by a 1501D in the sledgehammer enclosure in my 01 Chevy Blazer XLT and all my friends think it is ridiculously loud. You can actually feel the bass reflected off the windshield and hitting you in the face. I love this setup.

  • I BOUGHTT THIS SPEAKER AFTER A LOT OF RESEARCH. I HAVE A SINGLE SUB IN A AE PORTED BOX. I'M USING A MTX 81000D AMP TO PUSH IT. JUST TO MAKE THIS SHORT, I HAVE PEOPLE CHANGING THERE FOUR SUB SYSTEMS FOR A SINGLE SUB. THE BASS IS UNREAL; YOU CAN SEE THE ROOF JUMPING. IF YOU BUY THIS SPEAKER DON'T UNDERPOWER THIS SPEAKER, YOU WILL MISS NOTES AND KILL THE SQ. ALSO TRY A VENT PORTED BOX @3 SQAURE FEET IN TOTAL

  • This section was meant to review the quality of this mtx sub, not to battle over the w7/9500. Take it to the spl lanes and prove your stuff! Personally I will tell you I am a big fan of both jl and mtx. My sq car is all jl and it has taken home alot of trophies. My spl vehicle is all mtx, 3-9512's and 3-810001's. It has never done less than first, hitting an average of 167db I'd say they are pretty damn good. I would recommend this sub for both high spl and sql

  • Im 16 years old and i have one of these with a 1501D amp and a vented box in a 2002 tacoma double cab. My system hits harder than most of the systems at my school who have two to four 12's. I have never heard it skip a note yet and ive been blastin it for over a 2 months. Cant wait to get a second sub and amp!

  • Got 2 of these 12 " of them hooked up on a 5000 watt earthquake in a 5cu. inch box, sub hits super hard, and for the people that are arguing about which is better i think both are great subs, and both put out some serious bass . my next choice on subs are the W7's

  • This sub is great all the way through. It sounds awesome(SQ) and hits real low and loud. I think it has like a 1" one-way xmax so you know that this thing has some serious stroke. I own two 12w7s (1.15" 1-way xmax) hooked up to to 1000/1s in two Pro Wedge HO boxes and I gotta admit these 9500s do sound very much like my subs. My hat's off to MTX for making this thing so affordable. Im no hater so I won't try to bad mouth this sub with false comments. I own the W7s. I have them installed perfectly. My buddy has two of these with a bigass Elite MTX amp and it sounds everybit as good as my setup. Funny thing is that we both drive Chevy tahoes. His is a 04 and mine is a 02. No diff at all in SQ or loudness. Nice sub MTX. Great price on here too OCS.

  • Incredible sub. Just got it installed to a Kicker 750.1. This is actually 500-1000RMS, if you get this sub, stick with the MTX elite, either the TE1501D, or TE801D. The TA5601 will do it but don't change brand. The kicker does it, but Kicker is wattage and power rather than quality. Don't get this sub for power and loud sound, this is a quality sub with minimal distortion. Its comparable to a 10W6V2, close to a 12W7. This sub needs a good amp with power and sound quality- minimal distortion

  • WOW!! This sub is the real deal. I previously owned Sony Xplods (junk), and i have now stepped up to this sub woofer. Im pushing it with a Planet Audio P2250D, which runs at 1500wrms @ 2ohms and 2250wrms @ 1ohm. i only have a 1 Farad Capacitor and no dimming either. People can hear me from blocks away. Great Job MTX.

  • Im 37 and have been competing in sq and spl for over 20 years and have won the U.S. nationals, first place Iasca Idbl. I see alot of people talking about JL this and JL that. I own a shop and have done cars for professional athletes to high school kids, and have installed 50 W7 subs throughout the years, and numerous MTX 9500,s as well and yes different vehicles have different acoustics, but in my expierience the JL falls way short of the hype, the MTX 9500 has a better motor cooling andd its just built all around better, these things sound tremendously better as where the JL just gets muddy when the low notes are out and the high notes just get lost, the 9500 has a way better bl,total Q, and power handling they are great

  • back in 2004 i had 2 of these subs hook up in a 2003 maxima and they were powered by an alphasonik pma 1000hca pushing 3000 watts and i tell u this is the most hard hitting sub i've ever come across the maxima is destroyed now and i was force to part with them plus my friends were happy and the cops too, so now i'm trying to get back in the game again and from reading some of u guys review i guess i just made up my mine , so i will get the 9500 woooooo lol.

  • My second sub of choice, expensive and not as good quality as the Daytona Cadence DVC sub. MTX really hit it big with theese subs. Get a hifonics amp and it will sound super clean. W7's are shit and too expensive. MTX you can never go wrong!

  • I have a hifonics BXi 2000 and can't wait to hear this sub @ 4ohms until I decide to invest in another one and a box to accommodate it.Of course this sub hits! I had a 15".

  • I had a set of 10 in my 06 charger...htese things were so strong my trunk was damaged... I ended up having to repair my car and paint as a result. The power these things make is unreal. I used a fosgate mono amp rated to 1500 rms. I had the 10 inch... I plan on getting a set of 12 in for my new camaro. What scares me is how will I insulate my car to prevent blowing my windows apart. In contrast I have a 12 in solo x in my car now...sucks, and burned out...maybe the box wwas too small... I cant knock a solo x ...but I will do what I know works...goin back to mtx.
