Product Reviews For Nakamichi CD-400

  • this headunit may not look as cool as the others thats true but thats not what matters this headunit provides amazing sound quality at a low price and used by many car audiophiles for competitions

  • This stock/factory-look headunit is what I've been looking for. It provides sound quality far better than others at this price range. It's the inside that counts.

  • I have used nakamichi components for the past 4 years. I have an older model CD-45Z in my commuter-ride. It looks stock, which is an anti-theft feature in and of itself. This unit also looks "stock". It is simple to operate and the specs speak for themselves. Adding a mass-produced DSP would actually diminish the sound quality. Go with the Nak DSP if you want to tailor the sound to audiophile standards. All one really needs with this unit are clean amps and speakers rated for the output and frequency response of this unit for the best rolling rock concert you could ever want.

  • Unbelievable. I bought a cd-300 back in 98 or 99 when they were available at Best Buy (kind of stumbled on them)... Ever since then have been trying to find them again (thank God for the internet). It's really a wonder they are not more widely available. Used to be you could only get one if you bought a Lexus. I feel sorry for those "audiophiles" who spend way more for the mass produced popular units such as Kenwood, pioneer, etc... they do not have a clue what they are missing. The sound quality of Nakamichi vs. those units is like comparing an ultra high resolution 12 mega pixel digital camera picture to a grainy EGA 16 color photo on a 15 inch monitor. No comparison.

  • Can't beat this unit. The only gripe I have is the crystal display seems to be easily scratched. The wiring was so easy to hook up to an adaptor harness due to Nak's clear labeling of each wire, I had my girlfriend (who' never done anything like this) do it while I instructed her! "That's it!?!" Was all she said when we were done.

  • I've had this cd player for about3 months. The first month it was great, great sound quality, I hear sounds on this cd player that don't seem to come out on other cd players. Looks stock without the annoying "disco" lights. My only complaint is that about one month after buying this cd player is that it would skip on the slightest bumps. It would do this when it was cold outside (-30 degrees0 and then the problem would subside somewhat. This problem has largely gone away, but even now as it has warmed up, the anti-skipping ability of this cd player is not up to the same standard of my cheap Pioneer cd player in my other car. If weren't for that problem, this would be the perfect cd player for me.

  • This is one amazing sounding head unit. I should buy a second just incase they stop making them. Simplicity is a beautiful thing. Beats my top of the line Eclipse that I bought a year ago hands down with its ability to dig deeper into whats really on my cds.

  • Great looking unit in a porsche 996. Nice full featured remote but lacks some controls like ff/rwd on the deck itself. Skips on bumps more than my cheap old sony but overall, I am very pleased after my first year of ownership.

  • I replaced an older Alpine CD player because it wouldn't eject disks anymore. I did the replacement in about a half hour and immediately noticed degradation in FM reception over the Alpine. Also, when driving, the CD-400 has a slight alternator whine that wasn't present with my Alpine. I made all power and ground connections to the same exact points that the Alpine used. When playing CD's the sound is great just wish the FM reception was better, (I would rate it a 4), and I didn't have alternator whine. Maybe the CD-500 has an improved tuner.

  • Great CD Player for those who appreciate simplicity and good sound. Nakamichi doesnt cover up substandard output with pretty lights. If you want to really hear your music then come on over to the home team

  • I have been using Naks for over 15 years and I find that the sound quality of this CD 400 is superb. The set fit into my Honda Civic easily and it really looks as though it came installed from the factory .Thanks Nakamichi.

  • Sound is great, not many others keep up in this department. Plain jane and a weak fm reciever, are the only cons. Plays cd's better than 95 % of the rest. 24 bit dac's. very clean sound

  • The best sound quality period. Best bang for the buck. If you want sound quality for a reasonable price, Nakamichi CD-400 is unbeatable.

  • Survived the Trans Labrator Highway in a 1990 4Runner. That trip was on 2700 miles of gravel highway and it only skipped twice. One skip, I broke an idler arm on the truck when I hit a boulder that the grater exposed and couldn't swerve to miss it. No other player can even live up to this abuse. Truly an audiophile grade unit in every way. Would highly recommend this unit to anyone.

  • The Panasonic CD unit installed by the previous owner was full of showy graphics, but didn't have any QUALITY to back it up. Sound was less than desirable and the detachable plate short circuited every time you touched it. After extensive research, I finally decided on the Nak CD400. After installing in my e36 convertible, I don't think I could have made a better choice. The unit sounds GREAT and looks close to BMW stock. No annoying screensavers and graphics... just excellent sound quality with refined presentation.
