50A 16V to 14V Voltage Step-Down Module

Protect sensitive electronics in your high-voltage electrical system with the XS Power 993 Voltage Step-Down Module. Designed for automotive 16V DC systems, it safely reduces voltage to 14V for components that cannot handle higher system voltage.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • • Why does the XS Power 993 get extremely hot during use?
The 993 is designed to dissipate substantial electrical energy while reducing voltage, so its heat sink can become very hot—XS Power warns temperatures can exceed 200°F. It should be mounted where air can circulate freely and away from heat-sensitive components.
  • • Can the XS Power 993 handle a high-current electrical load continuously?
The 993 is rated for 25 amps continuous and 50 amps maximum/surge. Loads should not remain above 25 amps for extended periods, and the 50-amp limit should never be exceeded.
  • • Why isn't my sensitive equipment receiving the voltage I expected?
The 993 provides two different voltage-drop outputs. The blue wire drops approximately 2.4V, while the orange wire drops approximately 3.6V, so choosing the wrong output can result in a different voltage than expected.
  • • Which 993 output should I use when my vehicle has an alternator?
When an alternator is being used, XS Power specifies connecting sensitive equipment to the orange output, which provides approximately a 3.6V reduction in a typical application.
  • • What if my 16V setup does not use an alternator?
The 993 can also operate in systems without an alternator. For this type of installation, XS Power specifies the blue output, which reduces the voltage by approximately 2.4V.
  • • Is the XS Power 993 powerful enough for a large car-audio installation?
That depends on the current demand of the equipment being protected. The module is limited to 25 amps continuously, so it should not be treated as a 50-amp continuous converter for a high-current audio system.
  • • Could incorrect mounting cause problems with the 993?
Yes. Because the unit can generate significant heat, installing it in a cramped or poorly ventilated location can create a serious thermal issue. XS Power specifically recommends mounting it where it has good ventilation and where the heat sink cannot contact heat-sensitive parts.
  • • Why do people use a step-down module in a 16V electrical system?
A 16V electrical system can benefit certain high-performance components, but some standard electronics are not designed for that voltage. The 993 allows sensitive equipment to receive reduced voltage while the rest of the system operates at the higher 16V level.
  • • Is the XS Power 993 difficult to wire into a vehicle?
The basic installation uses the 16V battery positive connection for the module's red input wire, while the appropriate blue or orange output is connected to the sensitive equipment. Proper wire sizing and following the supplied installation instructions are important for a safe installation.
  • • Has the XS Power 993 actually solved problems in real 16V applications?
Yes. A verified Speedway Motors customer specifically reported that running a 16V system with an alternator had created problems and said the XS Power 993 fixed them. XS Power also lists the unit for 16V systems with or without alternators.

OUTPUT(Blue & Orange Wires):

  •  When not using an alternator- Connect sensitive components to the blue wire. This will drop the voltage 2.4 volts and will yield around 14.5 volts on a typical application with a fully charged battery.
  •  When using an alternator- Connect sensitive components to the orange wire. This will drop voltage 3.6 volts and will yield around 14.9 volts on a typical application.
