Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- • Will XSP311 fit my alternator?
It is designed for GM “SI” alternators from 1969–1988. Check the alternator plug before ordering.
- • Why doesn't my XSP311 connector match?
GM vehicles can use different alternator plugs even within similar model years. Matching the actual plug is more reliable than using the vehicle year alone.
- • Can I use XSP311 with a one-wire alternator?
No. XS Power's application guide states that its VCM is not designed for one-wire versions of the applicable SI alternators.
- • Does XSP311 work without an XSP310?
No. The XSP311 is a harness, not the voltage controller itself. It connects the alternator to an XSP310 or XSP320 controller.
- • Why isn't my voltage changing after installing XSP311?
The harness only provides the connection. Voltage adjustment comes from the XSP310/XSP320 controller, so both the controller and alternator application need to be correct.
- • Can I use XSP311 with a newer GM vehicle?
Not simply because it is a GM. XSP311 is intended for SI-series applications from 1969–1988; newer GM alternators may require another harness.
- • Why is my VCM not working after wiring XSP311?
A mismatched alternator plug or incorrect wiring can prevent the VCM from operating properly. XS Power recommends identifying the alternator plug first.
- • Can XSP311 be used with an aftermarket alternator?
Yes, if the aftermarket unit uses the compatible GM SI configuration. The harness is intended to connect compatible alternators to XS Power VCMs.
- • Is XSP311 a complete VCM kit?
No. Real listings specify harness only, with the VCM controller sold separately.
- • What should I check before buying XSP311?
Check the alternator model and plug rather than relying only on the vehicle year. XS Power specifically notes that VCM applications are determined by the alternator connection.
