I purchased this to go in a Jeep Wrangler,.. Is a very very good sounding unit. I have a older model Nak CD-35Z in my passenger car,..and the sound from both are excellent. the features on this are pretty good, but doesnt have text reading...thats no biggy anyway... I bought for the sound quality, and its supreme.
Great sounding deck, as you would expect from Nak! Its decidedly 80's styling compliments my VW rabbit. It's nondescript looks are probably a better theft deterrent than the detatchable face. Takes a long time to read MP3 cd's (20-30 sec.+ before they'll play) I'm using iTunes to burn them, perhaps another way would make them more recognisable. I would like to have an aux input, but that's my only major complaint. The model I got from onlinecarstereo is not the RDS version. I highly recommend this deck to anyone who cares more about sound than flashy displays, or who want's to keep the 80's look of their vehicle.
This unit does what I needed it to do. It has a single pair of RCA outs to power a single amp going to pair of component speakers. It's features are good and as a baseline model for nakamichi (and the first time i've dealt with this brand) it does wonderfully for the price. I got it to replace the factory Bose system in a 1999 Mazda Miata. A few considerations regarding this unit. -- The CD-300 has 2 versions - with RDS and without RDS. You can guess which one is being sold here even though the picture shows a faceplate with RDS. -- I bought this unit for simplicity and a stock appearance. It appears stock except for sticking out due to the removable faceplate. -- To get to the various menus, you must press the volume knob. The removable faceplate wasn't made to the closest tolerances, so when the knob is pushed, the faceplate moves in and out. -- There are two modes to choose from for how the seek button searches. SEEK 1, when activated, seeks to the next signal and goes no further. SEEK 2, when activated, seeks and stops at the next station only after you release the seek button. This would be an awesome feature IF it didn't seek at lightspeed. In this mode, holding the seek button for about a second will cover at least half the frequency range, so sadly, this mode seems relatively useless to me. -- No illumination control. Lights stay same brightness in day or night, lights on or off. Haven't tested the MP3 usage of it yet. Other than those few gripes, it's defintiely a well thought out head unit for the money. I'd still buy it again for this type of installation. For anything else, I'd definitely move up to the CD-400 though, even at double the price.
