Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- • Why does my amplifier keep shutting off or entering protection mode when driving this small 6-inch enclosure?
The CP106LG-W3v3 is wired to a 4-ohm load. If you bridge a 2-channel amplifier that is only stable down to 4 ohms when bridged, or if your amplifier gains are too high, the amp will clip, overheat, and trip its safety circuitry.
- • Why am I hearing a physical chuffing, huffing, or whistling noise coming from the box on deep bass notes?
This is port noise caused by air turbulence rushing through the slot port. It happens online when users try to force the 6W3v3 sub to play frequencies below its physical capabilities. Setting your amplifier's subsonic/infrasonic filter to 30Hz stops this.
- • Why does the bass output sound surprisingly weak or non-existent in my large SUV or truck?
This MicroSub is highly compact and designed for small cabin spaces. In a large SUV or an open trunk, the tiny 6.5-inch cone cannot move enough air volume to fill the cabin. It performs best when placed directly under a seat or inside a tight regular-cab truck.
- • I hear a loud clacking or popping noise when turning up the volume. Is the small subwoofer blown?
A clacking noise means the sub is bottoming out and its voice coil structure is striking the backplate. Because it is a tiny 6-inch driver, it cannot handle excessive bass boost or low frequencies without exceeding its physical travel limit. Turn down the bass EQ.
- • Why did the subwoofer stop working completely and start smelling like burnt electronics?
The subwoofer has suffered thermal voice coil failure caused by amplifier clipping. Pushing a small, entry-level 150W RMS subwoofer with a dirty, distorted signal melts the coil wires. You will need to replace the internal 6W3v3-4 driver and recalibrate your gains.
- • Can I wire a second CP106LG-W3v3 enclosure to the same channel on my monoblock amp?
Yes. Since each enclosure is a 4-ohm load, wiring two of them in parallel (positive to positive, negative to negative) drops the total final electrical resistance down to a 2-ohm load, which is completely safe for almost all standard monoblock amplifiers.
- • Why does the enclosure slide or flip over in my trunk whenever I turn a sharp corner?
Because this ultra-shallow wedge box weighs only 13.4 pounds and has a narrow base footprint, it shifts easily under centrifugal force. You must use the included Velcro strips or physically mount it down using L-brackets to secure it to your carpet.
- • Why does the bass sound tight and punchy on rock music but completely disappears during deep hip-hop tracks?
The miniature 6W3v3 sub inside this enclosure is physically limited by its small cone area and a factory tuning frequency around 37Hz. It excels at fast mid-bass punch but lacks the physical displacement to render ultra-low sub-bass notes below 35Hz.

I replaced my Cerwin Vega VPAS10 slim sealed powered subwoofer in my 2016 Porsche Cayman with a combo of JL Audio CP106LGW3V3 subwoofer and Alpine MRV-M250 amplifier running from my base CD31 stock stereo receiver. It fits perfectly behind the passenger seat. All I can say is I am very impressed, the bass sounds deeper and more extended lows than before. I am now a believer that even 6.5" woofer when properly designed (slot-ported) and given a good amplifier can produce impressive quality bass. I highly recommend this set-up to small space handicapped like my Porsche. OnlineCarStereo has the best deal!
