Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- • Why Does the CBW124S Sound Different in a Sealed Box Compared With a Ported Box?
The enclosure design has a major effect on bass response. The CBW124S is designed to work in both sealed and ported enclosures, so changing the box type can noticeably alter the amount, tightness, and character of the bass.
- • Can I Use the CBW124S With an Amplifier Rated Above 400 Watts RMS?
An amplifier with a higher rating can be used only with careful gain and signal management. Since the CBW124S is rated for 400 watts RMS, sending excessive continuous power can overdrive the voice coil and potentially damage the subwoofer.
- • Why Does My Amplifier Get Hot When Driving the CBW124S?
The CBW124S has a single 4-ohm voice coil, so the amplifier must be properly matched to a 4-ohm load. An unsuitable amplifier configuration or excessive gain can increase heat and cause protection issues.
- • Why Is My CBW124S Bass Louder at Certain Frequencies?
Vehicle acoustics and enclosure characteristics can create peaks or dips at particular frequencies. The subwoofer's 20–300 Hz operating range also means that crossover settings can significantly change how its bass blends with the rest of the system.
- • Why Does the CBW124S Need a Large Enclosure Opening?
Although it is marketed as a 12-inch subwoofer, the actual cutout requirement is approximately 11.81 inches, with an overall diameter of about 12.32 inches. Measuring the enclosure before cutting can prevent fitment problems.
- • Why Is My CBW124S Hitting the Back of the Enclosure?
The mounting depth is approximately 4.80 inches, while the overall depth is about 5.59 inches. Insufficient clearance behind the magnet or terminals can cause installation problems, so the enclosure should provide adequate internal space.
- • Why Does the CBW124S Make a Buzzing or Rattling Noise?
A buzzing sound may come from loose enclosure hardware, an improperly secured speaker, damaged wiring, or panels vibrating around the box. Checking the mounting screws and enclosure before assuming the driver is defective can help identify the source.
- • Can I Wire Two CBW124S Subwoofers to the Same Amplifier?
Two CBW124S drivers can be wired together, but because each uses a single 4-ohm voice coil, the final impedance depends on whether they are wired in series or parallel. The amplifier must be capable of safely handling the resulting load.
- • Why Doesn't the CBW124S Produce the Same Bass as a Larger Competition Subwoofer?
The CBW124S is designed as a Cobalt-series 12-inch subwoofer with 400W RMS power handling, so its performance should be evaluated within those specifications rather than against substantially larger or higher-powered competition drivers.
- • Why Does the CBW124S Bass Become Weak When I Open the Trunk?
The vehicle cabin and trunk can contribute to bass reinforcement. Opening the trunk changes the acoustic environment, which can make the bass sound less pronounced even though the subwoofer itself is operating normally.
