Why Choose JL Audio JD400/4 4-Channel Amplifier?
Compact and Powerful Full-Range Car Amplifier
Are you looking for a full-range car amplifier that is compact and can pack a lot of punch? The JL Audio 400/4 is maybe what you are looking for. This 4-channel car amplifier can easily be installed anywhere inside your vehicle as it does not need much space to power up your vehicle's audio system.
3-Way Protection Circuitry
The JL Audio 400/4 also comes with a 3-way protection circuitry that protects your amplifier from thermal, overload, and short circuit problems. With JL Audio's NexD Switching Technology, the amplifier can deliver superior power output with reduced distortion. It also has Differential-Balanced Inputs, eliminating noise from your connections and setup.
Powerful Class-D Performance
Thanks to its Class-D amplifier, the JL Audio 400/4 can handle a power output of 75 Watts RMS at 4 ohms and 100 Watts RMS at 2 ohms per channel. It has a signal-to-noise ratio rate of 108 dB and a frequency response of 12 Hz to 22 kHz, which really allows the amplifier to go loud with minimal distortion while still being able to deliver an extensive full-range frequency performance.
Flexible Two-Channel Mode and Enhanced Audio Quality
Although the JL Audio 400/4 is a four-channel amplifier, you can set it in a two-channel mode, allowing you to power up a pair of subwoofers while delivering 200 Watts of continuous power output. Lastly, it has variable high and low-pass filters to filter out unwanted frequencies, resulting in a more defined audio quality while protecting your speakers from blowing off.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- • Why does my JD400/4 work fine in accessory mode but throw a solid red protection light when I start the engine?
This is caused by voltage instability or a poor ground when the alternator starts. Verify that your battery is healthy and move your ground wire to bare, unpainted metal away from other vehicle electronics.
- • The status LED is solid Red and I have no sound at all. Is my amplifier dead?
Not necessarily; it means the amp is in Protection Mode. Disconnect the speaker plugs from the amplifier and turn it back on. If the light turns blue, your amplifier is fine and you have a short circuit in your speaker wiring.
- • Why does my amplifier stay on and drain my battery even after I pull the keys out of the ignition?
Factory radios often retain residual voltage or delay shutting off, keeping automatic turn-on modes active. Change the Turn-On Mode switch to "Remote" and run a dedicated 12V switched remote wire to your vehicle's fuse box instead.
- • I installed the amplifier but I only have sound from my front speakers. Why are the rears silent?
This happens when using a single pair of RCA cables. Slide the Input Mode switch to "2 Ch." to split and mirror the incoming audio signal to both the front and rear output channels.
- • Why am I getting a persistent engine whine or hissing noise that changes pitch when I step on the gas?
This is alternator whine from a ground loop. Keep RCA cables routed away from heavy 12V power cables, and ensure the Input Voltage switch is matched correctly to your head unit's output signal level.
- • How do I properly use the integrated clipping indicator ring around the gain knob?
Disconnect your speakers and play a test tone at 3/4 volume. Turn the Input Sens. knob up until the LED glows solid Amber, then turn it down slightly until the light turns off to set maximum clean power.
- • Why does my JD400/4 get incredibly hot and shut off after 20 to 30 minutes of listening?
This triggers Thermal Protection from a lack of airflow or improper speaker impedance. Ensure the amplifier has 1 to 2 inches of clear space around it and that your speakers are not wired below the stable 2-ohm limit.
- • Can I bridge the JD400/4 channels to run subwoofers?
Yes. Connect the positive speaker wire to Ch 1 (+) and the negative to Ch 2 (-). This bridges the channels to output 200W x 2 channels, but your subwoofers must have a minimum impedance of 4 ohms.
- • Can I splice my factory speaker wires directly into the RCA inputs?
Yes, because the amplifier accepts high-level signals through its RCA jacks. However, use proper RCA-to-speaker-wire adapters (like JL Audio's XD-CLRAIC2-SW) to avoid noise and ensure a reliable connection.
- • What size power wire and fuse should I use for the JD400/4?
Use a minimum of 4 AWG high-quality copper power and ground wire to prevent choke. The amplifier requires a 40A fuse, which must be mirrored at the main battery fuse block to safely protect the line.

Perfect for my 6.5 front and 6x9 rear speakers. Does the job well. Actually, it gives more than what I expected. For its price? It’s worth it. You can never go wrong with JL Audio.

Powerful multi-amp from JL Audio! Its capacity to deliver 100 watts RMS per channel is really more than enough to make my audio system sing and shout! You can also try out different settings with this amp but I don’t understand anything of this yet.
-
Running my front and rear speakers on the amp. So much power for the size. A true class D amplifier! Sound quality is top notch, and its the cleanest thing I’ve heard in a long long time. Controls like the filters also makes the sound much more better.
